How to Order Custom Portuguese Tiles

We create hand painted Portuguese tiles and murals for architects, interior designers and homeowners from all over the world.         

At Portuguese Tiles, we believe tiles are works of art. They can transform an ordinary wall into something truly unique, adding colour, character and personality to your home or business. 

If you have never ordered custom hand painted Portuguese tiles before, you may be wondering where to start. Can you choose your own colours? Can you use your own image or photograph? And how long will your order take?

Our custom tile service makes the process simple. Here are five steps to ordering your own bespoke Portuguese tiles. 

1. Choose Your Design

Start by choosing a design. You can browse our tile collections and select an existing design, or we can create something completely bespoke for you.

If you have found an image, pattern or piece of artwork that you love, you can send us a photograph, drawing or other source of inspiration. We can work with you to develop a unique design that is perfectly suited to your space.    

2. Decide Where to Use Your Tiles

Think about where your Portuguese tiles will be installed. Our hand painted tiles are suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, showers, living rooms, hallways, bedrooms and fireplaces.

They can also be used outdoors for patios, garden walls, outdoor kitchens, swimming pool surrounds and other decorative spaces.

Knowing where your tiles will be used helps us create a design that complements your space.

3. Measure Your Space

Once you know where your tiles are going, measure the area carefully.

Our hand-painted tiles measure 15cm x 15cm (5.9" x 5.9"). Measure the width and height of the area and note any features that may affect the design, such as windows, doors, sockets, switches, shelves, cooker hoods, corners and plumbing.

If your space has an unusual size or shape, we can adapt the design to fit your space. 

4. Approve Your Design and Start Painting

Once your measurements and final design have been confirmed and approved, we will begin painting your tiles.

Every tile is carefully hand painted in Portugal by skilled Portuguese artisans using traditional manufacturing techniques. Your approved design is brought to life tile by tile, with careful attention to colour, detail and quality.

Custom tiles are shipped within 7–8 weeks.

5. Receive and Install Your Tiles

Tile murals are not assembled before shipping. Mural tiles are individually wrapped and numbered on the back to help with assemby. 

Your tiles are packed with extra care to ensure safe delivery. We use strong, double thickness boxes, securely taped with parcel and fragile tape. 

Tile 1 starts in the top-left corner. Follow the numbering sequence, working from left to right to assemble the mural.

We recommend leaving a 1–2mm grout line between each tile. For the best results, we recommend using an experienced professional tiler to install your tiles.
